What’s it going to take?
What a protest weekend! We came away feeling empowered, and we know things will change. But will they? Probably not.
According to political scientist Erica Chenoweth, it’s not enough. Her “3.5% rule,” as it’s been coined, is the threshold of active resistance that has historically always achieved its goals.
Now let’s do the math. The estimate was that about 8 million people were protesting around the nation at the No Kinky Korrupt Kings march. With the population of 342 million (minus the 700,000 people that have been extricated since January of 2025), the protest represents about 2.3% of the population. We need a whole 1.2% more people to become active for the critical mass movement to succeed.
What will it take? Inflation? Tariffs? Bombing other countries for no apparent reason? Supporting genocides? Raping young children? Building his own ballroom while people struggle? Private armies attacking citizens? Unjust prisons? Blatantly shooting people? Threatening to kill anyone who is a political adversary? How about soaring gas prices? Nope. Not bad enough.
Geeze. I never thought it would take so much to have people put down the bible, switch off Fox Faux and really become critical thinkers. All Biden had to do was forget his lines, Clinton got a blow job, and Hillary had only to send some emails.
And Harris, well, it’s clear that misogyny is deeply rooted. She was standing up to not only racism but also sexism, which is almost invisible because it’s not only within the social structure but also every day within the home.
In the big picture, this is an exemplification of everything that is wrong with America. Many of these same issues were going on, but were cloaked heavily by propaganda and double-talk. Now, it is so very clear and out in the open. This will eventually lead to a clearing, restructuring, and moral strengthening of our society, government, and democracy.
But for now, we will continue down this circus of hell till that 1.2% to gets off their assess. That’s half as many more people, or 4 million, who must become active, show up, and tune in. We can bitch all we want, but until there is action, there will be no change. I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this, but I guess we must go all the way and watch the elections be dismantled.
Where as in Minneapolis half of the population protested. I pray that we don’t have to have blood on our streets to get people to rally.
