NEW MUSIC

FROM THE EDGE

These groups are destined for fame but they aren’t yet known by the ‘biggies’ in the music industry. Check them out and enjoy their raw rhapsodies.

SLEEPY TIME GORILLA MUSEUM

What? I’m not rambling nonsense, it’s a name of a band that has a lot of interest points. Do you love punk rock? Do you like strange, homemade instruments? Do you like Pink Floyd? Well then, this band is for you. After 13 years of hiatus, they are on a west-coast tour so you can see them live. In those years their underground following has increased. In their concerts, there are many people with their logo t-shirts hugging their albums. If you see their cryptic logo, you are in the know.

Faun Fables

This family band led by Dawn McCarthy is a beautiful mix of storytelling and what I can only describe as modern medieval melodies. Her voice is similar to that of the band Heart but more haunting and subtle.

Here is a short interview with Dawn McCarthy-

I’ve been inspired by a lot of different types of music. I've definitely been influenced by medieval culture as well as, rock music, folk music, experimental new music, classical music, and bar talk, and WC. It's all in there.

What I feel that we're doing is creating wonderment, seeking out wonderment, and making a place for wonderment. To keep that window open regardless of whatever is going on or whatever hardships and realities are happening around us.

There are no videos of this band but they are so worth listening to. Enjoy.

Rising Apalachia

This duet of sisters is inspired by the melodies of the American South. Their lyrics are inspiring, thoughtful and lyrical. Their entwining voices are seamless and lovely. This video is to inspire us all to be the healers we need to be.

OTYKEN

With all the new sounds out there, people are looking for something new and where are they finding it? – in the deep roots of native cultures.

Andrey Medonos, although not a native Siberian, loved his family’s apiary in the Siberian wilderness. He grew up hunting, fishing, and keeping bees with the native Chulym people. As he grew, he saw that the Chulym culture and ancestorial ways were in danger of disappearing. He started an Ethnographic Museum of Honey and became its director to preserve the cultures of the Chulym. He married an indigenous woman and they, together, created happenings at their museum to showcase and enliven the Chulym culture and people.

This led Medonos to start a Utube channel to show Chulym culture and how they used log beehives. He used the money he made from selling his ethno-honey to Japan to fund the instruments, costumes, and production of Otyken which means Sacred Land in Chulym. His wife is the main costume designer. With various members coming in and out of the group, they have produced some record-breaking hits. They used some of their money to construct a yurt to house their rehearsals, costumes, and instruments.

Unfortunately, the sanctions against Russia have really hit this group down. Their PayPal accounts were frozen, they couldn’t travel to the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and they couldn’t perform at the World Got Talent show.

They have their lives within their villages and summers are very busy with bees, foraging, and fishing. But keep an eye on this group. They offer fresh music with old roots.

ANNA MOSS

This artist is just on the cusp of blowing up. Her southern, down-home style mixed with insightful lyrics, edgy messages and a voice like Appalatia Nora Jones is pure bliss.

“Handmade Moments, which is my band I've had for a long time, our main message is just one of anti-war, anti-violence, and abolition. Seeing the problems with capitalism and how people get exploited and then the media turns us against each other and then we're just this divided mass of angry people. I’m trying to bring more unity through music. And then with this project, Anna and the Nightshades, I guess my big messages are a little less political and a little more human. Just like forgiveness and seeing the humanity in one another and learning to have conversations instead of blaming and playing the victim.

We choose the role that we're going to play. Bad things can happen to us. We can choose to move forward. We can choose to do something positive that will ripple out in a positive way. I mean, I've had a lot of bad things happen to me and so I can say that we have choices. We don't have to be in a negative space and ripple that out forever. So, I believe love and forgiveness helps. It helps with everything.”

REGGIE WATTS

Singer, songwriter, and comedian this artist is fully a trip. He pushes the limit but with simple, straightforward, and even obvious lyrics which makes it even funnier. He is more on the know scene but even so, got to spread this lyrical butter around.

When he lets his hair down it really gets fun

Completely Ridiculous

TORIN FROST AND THE PATTERNS OF SATURN

What I love about Frost is how he takes rap and funk and sings about hippy moments like looking for mushrooms, doing yoga, or, in the video, making some chamomile tea.

“Hello, hello. My name is Torin Frost coming live at this magical place, Oregon Country Fair. I'm so grateful to be able to share our music and our message. We're trying to capture these human feelings that we all feel throughout our daily life in our music. We all are mirrors and reflections of each other. Our music describes the simple pleasures of elderberry syrup and lion’s mane and love tales. We're taking this journey through hip hop because hip hop comes from the inner struggle and so we're trying to talk about the struggles of life but also painting it in a beautiful northwest way. The Northwest hasn't always been represented in the nature side of hip-hop. So, we're out here getting hip-hop, literally hippies in the forest. He-he!”

Yaima

A gentle spirit and poet, her music is hypnotic and transports you to another plane.

DEya Dova

With a techno-multicultural sound, Deya Dova rocks it with creative imagery and a gypsy vibe
